Independent Mental Capacity Advocate

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 required the introduction of a new Independent Mental Capacity Advocate Service. This service is applicable from the 1st April 2007. Click here for further details

British Institute of Learning Disabilities (bild)

Asist has been commissioned by the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD), through funding from the Department of Health, to undertake a piece of research to evaluate the effectiveness of advocacy for people facing communication barriers or who lack capacity. The project will develop a set of practical tools which advocacy schemes can use to evaluate and monitor their own projects.

Bild are also funding the REACH project at Asist to develop a project which focuses on Black and Minority Ethnic Communities and other ‘hard to reach’ groups in Stoke on Trent .  This project is to support people who do not usually get involved in self advocacy to take part in the REACH Parliament and other REACH activities.

Expansion of Generic Service in Staffordshire

Due to changes in care provision in Staffordshire, Asist has been funded by Staffordshire County Council to expand its generic services.  The extra advocates will be able to offer advocacy support to people who are affected by the Changing Lives Programme.  Advocates will work with residents to voice their views and wishes at assessments and reviews, etc.
Website Update

The Asist website will be undergoing some changes soon to bring the project information and other pages up to date. In the meantime if you need any information about the work of Asist or the status of the projects please feel free to ring the Stoke office (01782 845584) and speak to Hilary or Douglas .
